Through the eyes of a Sculptor video I learned alot about how the marble or stone is picked out for a speacial sculptor that an artists has in mind. I had no idea how marble was cut from the moutains and how it has many veins running it through it. It truely amazes me how they use to cut the stone from the mountain in the earlier days and then brought it down from the mountain.
In the video I also learned alot on how a scupltor starts a piece and then all the steps it must go through to become life size. I have a new respect for sculptors.
The readings in the text book were general but to the point in explaining how a piece is made but the video explained it in more depth. I liked the readings in the text book about a sculpture in casting and carving but also liked to look at the different materials used to construct a piece and the pictures that they used.
Glass and Ceramics video was also very eye opening. I never new alot about the chemical make up of the two items so I found it to be extremely interesting. For example to bake the substance at a certain temperature and then to cool it slowly gives you a hard yet fragile product.
The book readings were also very interesting. The pictures alone of the different glass and ceramic objects that artists made are very beautiful yet have a domestic purpose at the same time. The readings explained alot about the different types of crafts that produce some of the most extraordinary objects that humans used throughout history as well as present day.
In the video Installation Art was very helpful in trying to understand how an artist can call it art for me. I would look at the art and have a hard time figuring out why its called art. In the video the artists would explain their art and what idea they had in making it. This made it easier to understand.
In the readings from the text book I didn't feel explained how this is called art well. It touched on a few bases but not alot for me to get a full grasp on what Installation Art is or how and why we call it art.
In the end I enjoyed the videos alot they were full of great information and showed alot of the techniques used in the production of a sculpture, craft or Installation art. The videos helped in explaining why an artists go through what they do when creating a piece. Also that its not as easy as it looks.
