The Exhibition
The Exhibits at the Burchfield Penny Art Center were Loud rebellion to quiet reflection, Idle diversion to essential human rights. Spain Rodriguez, Bradley McCallum Jacqueline Tarry, John Toth, the Roycroft artists and students from Native American School 19.

The Gallery
Lighting that was used in the exhibit varied, from skylights to spot lights on the art work.
White was the color used on the walls of the Gallery.
The materials used in the interior architecture of the space are white smooth walls that all around with the appearance of a staircase which at the top of the staircase is a huge clear glass wall looking down on the art below.
The movement of the viewer through the gallery space was well used in the placement of art and video art.

The Artwork

In each exhibit the artworks were well organized.  For example the Spain Rodriguezs exhibit was given a whole wall dedicated to the art work and displayed tasteful in a couple other wall near by.  The Roy-croft artist display was displayed in its own section away from but together with the other displays.

The artworks were not similar in any fashion.  The exhibits were  expressing completely different types of messages through their art making each piece very unique.

Some pieces of the art work were framed to show individual identity other pieces were framed with wooden frames.
Each piece of art work was labeled with a small identity plaque next to the art work explaining the art piece, the artist and small artists had a written summary of their art work.
The proximity of the artwork to each other was probably about one foot from the next.

Art Piece number 1

1. This is a beautiful painting of a orange/yellow sunset set in a prairie or grass field. This painting just brings a person to a time of watching a sun set. The painting is small but the impact of a beautiful sunset puts your mind as though a person was actually there.
2.The painting is a sunset set in a grassy field that boarders on a forest.
3. The principles and elements used in this painting are lot of vibrant color, form and well use of space and possibly pattern as well.
4. I didnt see any symbols or metaphors in this  painting.  To me no hidden messages or expression were in this painting.
5. I think the artist is trying to show a peaceful sunset that many people take for granted.  The sunset is colorful and showing how beautiful mother nature can be.

1. "Tree" This is a beautiful painting of a fall seen within a forest. Three trees are presented with there trunk sizes expressed rather than the leaves or expressed rather than the leaves or branches.
2.Fall trees within a forest with leaves all over the floor of the forest .
3. The principles and elements used in this painting are color, form, proportion and space.
4.This painting reminds me of fall and taking brisk walks up at Letchworth during the fall season.  I however did not see any messages or hidden messages in this painting.
5. I think the artist was just trying to express the beauty of decay and the end of a summer/spring  seasons.

1. This paint is very colorful and expressive of a human body
2. This painting is of a mans body posing , yet not in human flesh color but full of vibrant colors.
3. The principles and elements used in this painting are well proportioned figure full of colorful pattern like colors and a well use of space.
4. This art piece spoke for itself, however i didn't see any symbols or metaphors other than the artists trying to express how Spain's people are colorful and full of dance moves.

Cubism and Expressionism

I have chosen the video on Expressionism because I do not know much about it and the use of color and the emotion of color intrigues me to learn more about it.

I also chose the video about the Impact of Cubism because the way an artist uses unfamiliar ways to represent form and space is very interesting. I wanted to see more examples and more explanation on its use.

In the video Expressionism, I learned how the key concepts of color were used to express different properties of a painting.  This video showed how artists used color to express feelings through pronounced lines, shape and proportion.

The video The Impact of Cubism showed me the concepts of Influential style and how an artist would use unfamiliar ways to represent form and space.

The videos related very well in my opinion to the reading of the text because the reading explained how or why expressionism and cubism came about but the videos showed a lot of art by different artists and how they incorporated the style into the artwork.  The video showed a deep connection to the style and who the artist was and how the thought of the specific style came about into their lives and threw their work.

I enjoyed the videos I found them to be very in-depth on the artwork, style, and period. I really liked how the video explained artwork, what the artist was thinking, and how their lives affected the artwork as well.  The videos and text reading also explained a lot about the periods, which also gave me a understanding of the art concepts used in the art work as well.

mask art

1. Carnival, Oruro, Bolivia

The devil mask captures the essence of the Oruro Carnival. The devil or Supay represents the Andean pre-conquest underworld figure that was lord of the hills and transmogrified by the Christians as the Devil. Masks like this are worn with equally ornate costumes in the big parade.

This mask is full of color, pattern, tecture from the color, and it has large horns that balane the proportion for movement.  The shape is well formed and the pattern is very well unique for its form.  

2.Devil mask

Carnival, Oruro, Bolivia

The devil mask captures the essence of the Oruro Carnival. The devil or Supay represents the Andean pre-conquest underworld figure that was lord of the hills and transmogrified by the Christians as the Devil. It has become one of the most popular carnival characters and is uniquely representative of Bolivian folk art.

This Carnival mask is very viberant and full of color that has emphasis on the forehead making emphasis on the eyes to lure your eye away from the actual holes for the mask wearer to see through.  Its a great mask that has form of an animal.

3.Clown Mask

Tacana people, Bolivia

8 inches, natural wool

The Tacana Indians live in and around the Madidi National Park in the rainforests of Bolivia. Like most of the other indigenous groups in that country, they are gifted mask makers. This particular mask is new and unpainted.

With this mask i liked the way simple lines were used along with texture because it was made from wood.  

This mask had a simple pattern on both sides of the mask which give it a facial form that is clear.  Their is a emphasis on the tongue because its a clown face that will make a person laugh.

Buddhism and Hinduism

1. I selected the video on Buddhism and Hinduism because I know absolutely nothing on these two Religions or their impact on art and architecture.

2. In the video about Buddhism a key concept that I learned was how the religion has contributed to art, in both a symbolic and a story telling aspect.  In Buddhism the god has beautiful architectural building built telling the story of life and how fact and legend intertwine.  The developed a way to interpret wood techniques of art and architecture in stone carvings that are unbelievable mesmerizing.

In the video of Hinduism a key concept that I learned are all about the way art is incorporated into the massive structures of architecture.  The sculptures incorporated into the massive stone buildings are dedicated to a god and tell a story with each building about the god.  Everything about the religion is very symbolic and just emotionally drawing to a person.

3. The videos related to the text reading because in the text reading it touched on both of these religions.  However with the videos I got to see more pictures of the actual places that are built to practice the religions and see actually what they look like. 

4. I really liked the films. I really liked seeing where they were and how the way of life was with Buddhism and Hinduism.  I learned a lot about both religions and have a better understanding of why their buildings look the way they do and their art.  The art and architecture is very extraordinary in my opinion.

Hand drawings

1. Using my hand as a subject started off ok but as i got to drawing and the mistakes happened and i drew and redrew my hand got tired but i also noticed that what i was drawing looked nothing like my actual hand.

2. I used the media pencil because i really haven't used charcoal to much in drawing. I just felt more comfortable using pencil.

3.  The drawing of my non-dominant hand felt fine because i had control over what i drew, when drawing my dominant hand however I felt very weird and in no control at all.

4. My final drawings were a success  I felt that the comparison from one drawing to another were very similar and  had nice lines that shaded well together however I am not very good at the skin folds in the hand.

5.I would not use my non-dominant hand in creating artwork for the future.  I am very bad when using my left hand because there is no detail or perfection in the work. However practice does make

Video Blog

I chose the video Velazquez and Albrecht Durer: Image of a Master because I had never heard of these two artists and was interested in learning more about them.  Also I thought that their names were very unique.

The key concept of the Velazquez video that I learned was that he used the technique of capturing the moment in his work. His work showed true emotion.  He also painted with balance of light and color, but with the use of simple colors. 

In the Albrecht Durere: Image of a Master video I learned the concept of Italain Renaissance forms and ideas that were introduced.  He was very good at printing his work on different forms of artistic material such as steel, cooper and wood.  He was also called the first real landscape artist. 

The videos related to the readings in the text because these artists had used concepts from the Renaissance era and or contributed art to the many times suggested in the readings. 

I enjoyed the films, I got to learn many new things about a couple of artist and how times were in their lives and how they saw and developed art and art concepts.  Life was much different back then and the way of developing art was very unique. 

Human Body

In the first video, Cairo Museum which opened in 1902 I thought it was amazing. I picked too watch this video because I find the Egyptian way of life very interesting and unique.  

Also I watched The Measure of all things, Greek Art and the Human Figure.  I chose this video because i was intrigued by the human figure after watching the More Human Than Human.

For both video most concepts that i learned where associated with contrapposta, casting, assembling and carving.  I also learned about craft and arts with the different artifacts in the Cario Muuseum.


The videos related well to the chapters because they read alot about egypt, Greece and Rome.  Both video's had information on egypt, Greece and Rome in these videos.

I really liked the video's. I specifically liked the one about the Cairo Museum. The way to see a culture and the artifacts from its time was awesome   I really liked how they explained why the egyptions  art always looked the same.   This video gave a unique look at why art always looked the same or distorted.
